The Art of Making Soup
The Lost Art of Making Soup: A Tribute to Patience and Flavor
In today's fast-paced world, we've lost touch with the art of making soup—a dish that embodies warmth and patience. Reflecting on my culinary roots, I think of my mother, the original SaucyBrownGirl. She excels in cooking and baking, yet struggled with one dish: soup.
I remember watching her attempt chicken soup, laying out fresh ingredients but never quite achieving the flavor she hoped for. It taught me that soup, like many things in life, requires time and patience.
In honor of my mother and busy cooks alike, here’s a quick and flavorful chicken soup recipe using rotisserie chicken. It saves time without sacrificing comfort.
SBG’s Quick Chicken Soup Recipe
Ingredients:
1 rotisserie chicken, shredded (bones for broth)
1 onion (diced)
2 carrots (sliced)
2 celery stalks (sliced)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
3 cups chicken broth
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried parsley
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Heat broth over medium heat, adding chicken bones, onion, carrots, and celery.
Stir in garlic, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer on low for as long as possible, seasoning with salt and pepper.
Strain after simmering, return broth to the pot and add shredded chicken. Add noodles, potatoes, rice, or frozen vegetables as desired.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve with sourdough or a crusty roll.
Pair with a sandwich for a heartier meal.
A Lesson in Patience
Though my mother may never master soup, her journey reminds us that good things take time. This quick chicken soup still captures the comfort of a long-simmered dish. Appreciate the process, whether quick or slow, and cherish the simple joys of cooking—one spoonful at a time.
